I attended an Adepticon staff gathering today mostly to determine how I could contribute to the 2012 event. It didn’t hit me until we were all talking shop, and Hank mentioned that this will be the 10th year for Adepticon! Wow. I have been going for the last 5-6 years, or at least that would be my guess if pressed on the issue, but I hadn’t realized it was around this long. This made me very happy, but not so much in a general, sentimental way, but rather just because it causes me to reflect on how far the convention has come in a decade.
Adepticon has managed to become a premiere warhammer 40k event during a time where GW had more or less abandoned support of independent tournaments. Over the early years the organizers worked very hard to make sure it was a good, and unique experience for attendees. The event grew over time, and wisely in my opinion, have included other game systems including the specialist line, Flames of War, Warmachine, and Malifaux to name a few. Last year was the first year for the Crystal Brush painting competition, with amazing paint and modeling work which rivals that at the Golden Demon, and Gencon.
Seeing the event go from strength to strength, and to embrace the TTG community as a whole when it must have seemed simpler to focus on running WH40k games has been very inspiring. I am glad to be involved.
